Walmart hosts second job fair for new distribution center in Mobile County

The Walmart distribution center in Theodore attracted thousands of people to the first of three job information sessions at Alma Bryant High School.

Paula James was one of the first people to arrive and learn more about the opportunities the center will provide.

"Oh my god. It's like the biggest opportunity of my life. It's like, I would be getting insurance, better pay, and it's just like so awesome," James said.

More than 2,000 people covered the high school campus for the first of three information sessions held by the retail giant.

Mobile resident, Brittany Martin, said she attended the session to learn "Pretty much the detail of each job position and that way I know which one is best for me to apply for. That way I can do my best if I do get it."

The goal of the information session was to provide applicants with additional details about the company, available positions, the application process, training and benefits.

According to Walmart representatives, the distribution center will employ more than 550 people and all employees would start at $15.50 an hour.

"It feels good that everyone starts at the same level. Everyone gets to work up. Nobody has a better advantage than the other. So it sounds pretty good to me," Martin said.

Construction is still underway for the $135 million facility, but the company hopes to start the hiring process sometime next month.

For many people in attendance, securing a job with the distribution center would be a life-changing event.

Mobile resident, Phillip Thompson, said "The past two months I've been working at Five Guys and it's just not what I'm looking for. If I got hired here it would mean a lot to me because I can actually make a lot more money and probably do something for myself."

The company plans to hold two more information sessions in the future.

The next one is at Theodore High School on Saturday, January 27th from 9 a.m. To 12 p.m.

The final information session will be held at Bishop State College on Saturday, February 3rd from 9 a.m. To 12 p.m.

Walmart plans to open the center on May 1st.
