(Meredith) -- One Wisconsin family got some extra attention and a threatening letter after they added a Donald Trump flag to their holiday decorations.
Hate found its way to the front porch of a Sheboygan, Wisconsin home on a black lined with holiday cheer.
When Helen Powers got the letter, she didn’t even have to open the envelope to know shoe wouldn’t like what was written inside.
"To think that someone would be so cruel," she said.
Addressed with a vulgar word, the first of many included in the message, the letter claimed to be from a neighbor.
"I was thinking how could someone be so hurtful and hateful and actually physically mail it," Powers said.
“I see from your flag outside you hate America and will do anything to kill it,” the letter reads, referring to the President Trump re-election flag Powers had put up the day before.
"To take the time to actually mail it, why? Just over a flag," she said.
The letter continues, telling the family they should go back where they came from. Where the author claims that is had to be censored.
It also says that the author is not one of the family’s “Nazi friends,” and ends with “Get the ‘expletive’ out.”
"It's terrible how things change," Powers said.
Sheboygan police told FOX 6 they are investigating the incident, but it is not clear if the anonymous author committed a crime.
Even if it is not illegal, the Powers family say the letter and its author crossed a line.
"I would say everybody's gone way too far, way over the edge, that's for sure," Glenn Powers said.
The Trump flag still flies outside the Powers’ home. They said they refuse to take it down, standing by their beliefs and their candidate no matter what their neighbor has to say.
"It's sad that it's come to this,” Helen Powers said. “We are just regular people."
The officers that patrol the neighborhood are aware of the situation.
The Powers family says they are taking extra precautions to protect their home and their flag.
