JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Authorities in Florida are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy whose mother says accidentally shot and killed himself inside a family friend's apartment.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says the boy died hours after he was shot on Saturday. News outlets quote family members as saying the boy's name was Jayden Piedra.
Investigators have not said how he was shot, but said no suspects are at large. Jayden's mother, Donna Crump-Piedra, told WJAX-TV that the boy found a gun inside the home and then accidentally shot himself.
“I don’t know what I’m going to do without my baby!" the mother said in an interview. "That’s my best friend! He’s everything to me! Both of my kids are.”
After posting on Twitter about Jayden's death, the sheriff's office added a reminder that Florida law requires guns to be stored safely from children.
