Update: The Alabama Department of Transportation reopened the I-10 WB Bayway at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. A crash involving a Mobile County Sheriff's Office vehicle and an 18-wheeler led to a massive fire Monday night.
The Sheriff's Office said a deputy had been following street sweepers on the Bayway with blue lights flashing when his vehicle was rear-ended by the big rig around 9:15 p.m. Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran tweeted that both the deputy and the truck driver were not hurt. The sheriff's office said the deputy was stopped on the bridge as street sweepers were cleaning the Bayway.
The crash caused a massive fire that burned for about an hour.
A spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Transportation said an inspection crew will be sent to the bridge after the scene is cleared. If the bridge has suffered enough damage from the intense heat, it's possible the westbound lanes of the Bayway could still be closed Tuesday morning.
ALDOT said this bridge fire is different from the 2014 fire on the I-65 bridge over the Mobile River. The 2014 fire happened on a section of bridge with steel girders while the Bayway has concrete girders.
