Kristen Amy McElhaney took on a life-long dream Tuesday. The Wintzells oyster eating challenge. The women’s record to beat – 215 in just one hour. That’s nearly 18 dozen oysters and it’s a record that’s stood for 22 years!

“3 - 2 - 1”

McElhaney got off to a quick start... downing dozen after dozen.

All this gluttony is for a great cause. McElhaney raised more than $4000 for the Distinguished Young Women scholarship.

And she looked unstoppable knocking back 150 in the first ten minutes. And then came the wall...

Oysters fight back

“I’m not quitting, it’s just a matter if I can physically finish.”

Shortly after that interview their was um, well we’ll just say technical difficulties.

Turns out though there’s no rule about tossing your oysters. So shortly thereafter McElhaney kept going. And at about 45 minutes the magical moment... 216 oysters a new record!

McElhaney didn’t stop there, she made it to 223... a little padding for any other would-be challengers.

“I’ve been looking at that board my entire life. And when I came in Clay had already put my name up there and honestly that’s something I’ve always wanted since I was a little girl.”

And she got it! And really is there anything more Mobile than earning a spot on Wintzell’s wall?
