TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer has died after a shooting in west-central Alabama and a suspect is in custody.

Alabama Media Group reports 40-year-old Tuscaloosa police officer Dornell Cousette was shot Monday night and pronounced dead at a hospital after responding to a tip that a suspect wanted on warrants was in a home.

Tuscaloosa Interim Police Chief Mitt Tubbs said shots were fired after Cousette pursued the suspect, who had run inside the house.

Authorities say an unidentified 20-year-old suspect who was also wounded fled the scene of the shooting and was arrested at a hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately released.

Cousette was an Army veteran who had been with the police department for 13 years. He was engaged and had two daughters.
