This is a typical Wednesday morning for the cougars.

Weights clanking, sweat dripping, and teammates motivating each other.

"We went into this season saying hey we're not going to take second place,” said Sam Shelton, Hankins Middle School Head Football coach.

"No other middle school has the atmosphere or the athletes that we have,” said EJ Simmons, an 8th grade quarterback at Hankins.

Yes, this tight run ship, is a middle school team and no, they aren't just talk. They went undefeated this year for the first time in school history.

"I get to brag to my granddad, he went here and he didn’t do that. We went 8-0 and made school history. It's a great feeling,” said Simmons.

Hankins head coach, Sam Shelton has taken this team to new heights.

"He's kind of like a second father. He is a really coach on the field but when he's off the field he's caring. He looks big and mean but he is really nice and he encourages people a lot,” said Cameron Rigby, a 7th grade wide receiver at Hankins.

What's more incredible than their record are the lessons they're learning.

"I have a sign in here that says don't bring no negativity in here. Be positive, have a good attitude, give maximum effort and you'll be just fine,” said Shelton.

Their record-breaking season is over but the bond between this team continues to grow stronger every day.

"I would describe it as a family, when someone’s down we always pick them up, we get along. I pretty much love everyone on this team,” said Rigby.
