They anxiously wait at the starting line, nerves building, and they are off.
It is a feeling like none other.
"You feel free when you're running,” said Joshua Graham, a Mobile Parks and Recreation Department athlete.
"Well I love track. That's just something I have a passion for,” said Aaliyah Muhammad, a Mobile Parks and Recreation Department athlete.
Crossing the finish line first, now that's a different feeling.
"Like getting presents and earning stuff,” said Melina Fisher, a Mobile Parks and Recreation Department athlete.
"Happy, you know sometimes you want to scream but I am humble so I just keep it all in,” said Muhammad.
The Mobile Parks and Recreation Track and Field team knows a thing or two about winning.
As 29 of their athletes recently qualified for the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics.
"A lot of the teams we compete against are elite teams but our athletes have found through hard work, determination and a good work ethic, all things are possible,” said Jan Hickman, a Mobile Parks and Recreation Department Head Coach.
They run a tight ship. They practice five days a week for two and a half hours at a time.
The athletes know what it takes to be on top.
"To set your goals and you have to work hard to get to them. You can’t just settle for less,” said Muhammad.
"The harder you work the better you get,” Graham.
"Push hard, and keep running and don't give up,” Fisher.
