Designed to benefit the youth in the surrounding community, The Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, along with the Frank Brown Foundation for Music (501c3), has developed an In-Schools Outreach and has been offering this program to area schools free of charge, for over 13 years.

The In-Schools Outreach is a multi-faceted and unique educational experience which introduces students to the wonders of songwriting and serves as a path to creative self expression. Professional songwriters with accompanying educational skills are brought in to speak to students of all ages, combining performance with an interactive approach and utilizes a variety of skill building techniques. Statistics show that programs such as this improves academics and can benefit students in developing self esteem, critical thinking, collaboration and a healthy mental attitude towards learning, as well as, overall communication skills. Per the program Director, Karen E. Reynolds: “Our goal is for the student’s excitement in songwriting and writing, in general, to carry on and allow them to build skills that will benefit them far beyond the class room.”

An important aspect of the Outreach is the production and presentation of an annual Youth Showcase, by which student Songwriters are given the opportunity to perform in a professionally produced showcase before an audience of their peers from surrounding schools. Participating artists are selected based upon songwriting skill and performance ability. Invitations are provided to area high schools for students to attend the showcase, as well as, participate in a catered luncheon provided by Lulu's of Gulf Shores just prior to the showcase. From those performances, several artists are selcted to receive small cash scholarships and one songwriter/artist will receive an invitation to become a paid and featured songwriter in the following year's Frank Brown International Songwriters Festival, performing alongside some of the most accomplished songwriters in the music industry. Also, this year our entire production and sound team will be comprised of student interns from area schools, providing them hands on experience in producing such an event.
