MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - It’s a big day for the Mobile Regional Airport. There’s now another nonstop flight option for travelers.

The skies were clear Thursday morning, making the conditions perfect as the first nonstop flight from Washington, D.C. to Mobile landed.

Passengers were greeted and welcomed to the port city. One passenger we spoke with says she had no idea that this was the inaugural flight, but she’s grateful that she can now fly closer to home instead of flying in and out of Florida.

“Typically, I would fly into Pensacola because that was the only nonstop. So, I’m happy that it’s back. They used to have it before 9/11. I used to fly this flight. I’m glad it’s back,” Tykeithia Williams said.

The Mobile Airport Authority has been busy this year with construction continuing on the new Mobile International Airport, and a new airline Breeze Airways offering flights to Orlando.

And this is just another step in the right direction.

“Certainly, Washington is a great city to visit as its own destination. But the connectivity that Washington Dulles International provides to us. It connects Mobile to the world,” Mobile Airport Authority President Chris Curry said.

And while Thursday was a day for celebration, they’re already looking forward to the future.

“I think that it may create an opportunity for other destinations, not just with other airlines but also United. They have major hubs in Denver and Chicago. And those are both cities that rank very high on our list. So, we will look to start conversations very quickly to those other hubs as well,” Curry said.

The service will be available two times a day. Tickets for the two-and-a-half-hour flight are already available on the Mobile Regional Airport website.
