911 transcripts reveal before, during and after deadly stabbing at Mount Vernon graduation party
MOUNT VERNON, Ala. (WALA) - 911 transcripts reveal the chaotic moments before a graduation party turned deadly in Mount Vernon.
Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch says 20-year-old Caleb Reed and 20-year-old David “Man-Man” Sullivan were longtime friends.
On May 9, Sheriff Burch says they got into a personal dispute that turned physical.
“The defendant pulled out a gun, shot several rounds and the gun was taken from him by a mutual friend. They were separated and went about their ways. A few minutes later they encounter each other again,” Burch said.
Sheriff Burch says Reed came back, this time with a knife.
He says someone was cut trying to stop Reed and Reed then stabbed Sullivan four times, killing him.
Multiple 911 calls
According to the Mobile County Communications District, 12 calls were made in reference to the graduation party.
Transcripts show the first call came in at 10:41 p.m.
The caller tells the operator “I need the law to come make a loop at Coy Smith Highway. We got a lot of children piled up in the area and we just need them to get out of this area.”
The caller says people are arguing and someone has a gun. The person then says, “We just want the law to come here and kinda like…clear them off scare them off.”
About 30 minutes later, a second call comes in saying, “We’re having a party, and they got guns out shooting.”
The dispatcher asks if anyone has been shot, and the caller says no.
The caller then says the person fired six shots and left the area in a black truck.
Just minutes later, transcripts show someone else calls 911, begging first-responders to help.
The transcripts show the caller saying, “Oh my God! Please! Please wake up.”
At the same time, another caller asks for an ambulance, then says, “I didn’t see the fight, but I saw a knife and his nickname was Man-Man. But he is passed– he is passing out. Can y’all hurry up and get here?”
Moments later, emergency radio captures first-responders arriving on scene saying, “Be advised. CPR in progress.”
Sullivan’s family and friends say he was loving, respectful, and could light up any room he walked in.
Reed has pleaded not guilty to murder and second-degree assault.
Reed has since been released on a $425,000 bond.
Court records show his preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 22.
