One confirmed dead in shooting at hotel in Tillman’s Corner
MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) -- Mobile police on Thursday identified a woman killed in a Wednesday morning shooting at a hotel in Tillman’s Corner.
Authorities identified the victim as Melissa Cody.
Two people were shot late Wednesday morning at a hotel in Tillman’s Corner, according to the Mobile Police Department.
It started around 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Days Inn & Suites on Inn Road off of Interstate 10.
Mobile police Sgt. John C. Young said officers responded to the motel at about 11:30 a.m. for a report of gunshots. He said a 35-year-old man fired at a 42-year-old woman inside a third-story room, hitting her in the stomach. A man who was in the room with the woman returned fire and hit the suspected shooter in the leg.
“Unfortunately, (the woman) did not survive,” Young said.
Young said the preliminary investigation shows that the man inside the room after the first gunman fired.
“We are confident he did,” he said. “As I said, it’s early now. It’s a big crime scene. But he was involved. The person inside the room did return fire.”
Key details are still under investigation. Young did not identify either of the men involved. And he could not immediately say how many shots were fired, what may have sparked the violence or whether all three people knew one another.
“It’s still early,” he said. “We aren’t sure what their relationship was or what is the motivation behind this.”
Police said the man shot in the leg sought medical care at a nearby urgent care facility on Rangeline Road.
A witness near the American Family Care scene tells FOX10 News that the person police say is the initial shooter was honking and screaming as he drove up and stopped in the middle of the parking lot near the urgent care.
That witness who did not want to be identified said the man was yelling that he could not feel his legs.
At that point, the witness said nurses and doctors from the urgent care came rushing out to try and help the man.
Ultimately, after some time, an ambulance showed up and rushed him to the hospital and we are told he is dealing with non-life-threatening injuries.
The witness says when police got on scene, an officer pulled a rifle out of the SUV and took it into evidence.
